Education Project
HVP Gatagara in Rwamagana is the only school for the visually impaired in Rwanda. Its aim is to integrate the visually impaired back into Rwandan society so they can be independent both economically and socially. The girls in particular, had a real problem in their dormitories as their clothes were gettomg mixed up with others. Msaada has provided an individual storage space for their belongings through installing wardrobes in each of the dormitory rooms in the girls’ block. This school is a joy to visit and the work they do is so important as they seek to overturn the stigma attached to disabled people especially in the rural areas of Rwanda thus giving a “voice to the voiceless”. The project was suggested by the girls of the school. The cost of this project was completed during 2011.

The Excel Bilingual School
This school is a local initiative, funded by parents and teachers to provide quality education, with the emphasis on a high standard of English and French, to all the children of Kigabiro Sector, regardless of ethnic background. Msaada provides bursaries to 70 students to enable them attend the school. Some 19 of the top 25 students in the school are supported by Msaada. Without this support, these promising students would not be receiving an education.
Primary and Secondary Students
Msaada is assisting over 100 other young people to attend local primary and secondary schools in Rwanda. We have also provided a new science lab and an IT system at Rwamagana Seconday School to improve the quality of education received by the students there.

Study visit
Msaada has funded a successful primary school study visit from the Excel School in rural Rwamagana to the capital, Kigali. The students visited the Presidential Palace, the airport, a textile plant and the genocide memorial centre. They also were given a meal in a city restaurant and were given a commemoration T shirt! Many of the students taking part had never been beyond their village. The somewhat surprising all-in cost of a trip for 60 students and teachers was £300!
